13-ാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ജർമ്മൻ നാടോടി കഥകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈസ്റ്റർ ബണ്ണിയുടെയും, ഈസ്റ്റർ മുട്ടകളുടേയും ഉത്ഭവമെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നൂ. ശരിക്കും പറഞ്ഞാൽ ഈസ്റ്റർ ബണ്ണിയെന്ന് പറയുന്നത്‌ നീണ്ട ചെവികളുളള കാട്ടുമുയലുകളെയാണ്. ആ മുയലുകളെ വിളിക്കുന്നത്‌ ഹെയർ (Hare/ Osterhase /Oschter Haws) എന്നാണ്. നാടോടി കഥ അനുസരിച്ച്‌ ഈസ്റ്റർ ഹെയർ വന്ന് വീടിന്റെ മുന്നിലുളള പൂന്തോട്ടത്തിൽ നിറമുളള മുട്ടകൾ ഇടുകയും, കുട്ടികൾ അത്‌ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് ഈസ്റ്റർ എഗ്ഗ്‌ ഹണ്ട്‌ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്‌. കുട്ടികൾ മര്യാദയോടെ പെരുമാറുന്ന വീടുകളിൽ മാത്രമേ ഈസ്റ്റർ ബണ്ണി വരികയുളളൂവെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ്‌ കുട്ടികളുടെ സ്വഭവ രൂപവത്കരണത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായും ഈസ്റ്റർ ബണ്ണികൾ മാറാറുണ്ട്‌. 

The origin of the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs is from German folklore in the 13th Century. It is said that the Easter Bunny is not a rabbit; it is a hare, which is also called Osterhase or Oschter Haws instead. It has a long ear and is bigger. According to German folklore, Easter bunnies visit the house and lay colored eggs in their garden. Collecting these eggs is considered an egg hunt. It is also another belief that bunnies visit the houses only after evaluating whether children were good or disobedient in behavior in the season of Eastertide. So Easter bunnies play a vital role in developing an integral behavior in kids.

The folklore of egg-laying-hare was brought to the U.S. by Protestant German immigrants in the 17th century. Easter eggs represent new life and new beginning. In Christianity, Easter eggs represent the tomb of Jesus Christ and His resurrection. In ancient days, as part of Great Lent, people abstained from consuming animal products and eggs. They collect the eggs, decorate them with natural colors and use them for easter egg hunts. Nowadays, those eggs are replaced with chocolate eggs.
